Commissioner of Police, Anti-Bomb Squad, Force Headquarters, Abuja, Mr. Abdulmajid Ali, has said that the unit is set to pick 1,000 officers to undergo training at the Police Training School, Ikeja, Lagos State.
The training would be four weeks, in line with the Inspector General of Police (TGP), Alhaji Mohamed Abubakar’s aspiration.

 He said, “The squad is for the detection, identification, recovery, field evacuation and render safe of explosives.”

He charged unit commanders in various commands to be up and doing in their duties. He advised them to be careful in handling explosive materials and to report any suspicious element to him immediately.

Ali stated that the Anti-bomb Squad’s function is the recovery and disposal by demolition of explosives which have become hazardous by deterioration.

He added that the squad has provisions of specialized EODS security services at the airports, seaports and other entry points: “There is also provision of security at vulnerable points such as explosive magazines, oil and related faculties, government installations to prevent sabotage. The escorts of explosives/radioactive materials to prevent loss of control.”

He explained further that the squad has inspection and control of commercial explosives and radioactive materials of which are legal and are imported to ensure such importation are in accordance with the import permit and license issued by the relevant authority.

The Anti-bomb Squad has investigated cases involving the use of explosives and appearance in court to give evidence. Ali warned the public against responding to bomb blast incident, saying they should not pick up detonators because they are potent explosive.

He said people should not ask unprofessional persons or civilians to remove an IED: “You may solicit information regarding a suspected criminal as far as possible while looking for clues.”
