A review of how Nigerian players fared in Europe on Wednesday.

Three Nigerian players were in action at Goodison Park when Everton hosted Leicester City in a Premier League game on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.

Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi were on from the start for Leicester City and Everton respectively while Kelechi Iheanacho came on after halftime.

It was a good game from the trio although it was Iwobi who ended the night the happier player.

He was good enough for Everton on the night as he played from the right and helped Carlo Ancelotti’s side keep the shape defensively. Unlike the game at Norwich, he wasn’t that dangerous going forward and didn’t have any moment offensively.

Ndidi conceded a harsh penalty for Leicester City from which Everton doubled their lead in the first half. In what could be the longest VAR decision, the Nigerian was punished for using his hands to touch the ball while jumping to head during a set-piece situation.

It was indeed a harsh decision but Everton were happy to score from their first penalty of the season.

Leicester City coach Brendan Rodgers made some changes at halftime which included Iheanacho. The Nigerian was lively and tried to make this happen in attack for Leicester City.

He pulled one back for Leicester City off a lucky goal in the 51st minute. A clearance ricocheted off the Nigerian for his fourth league goal of the season.

In other parts of Europe, Victor Moses got a penalty for Inter for one of their goals in their 6-0 win over Brescia. Moses played 68 minutes of the game before he was taken off.

In Spain, Nigerian midfielder Ramon Azeez played the whole 90 minutes as Granada got a 2-0 away win at Alaves.

Samuel Chukwueze played just about 10 minutes in Villarreal’s 2-0 win away at Real Betis and had enough time to create a chance for Santi Cazorla who could only hit the post with his effort. A first-half brace by Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal the win.

Back to England where Semi Ajayi played a few minutes as West Brom got a 3-0 win away at Sheffield Wednesday. Ajayi was introduced in the 88th minute with the win already secured.
