Cyriel Dessers and Paul Onuachu were on the scoresheet as Genk got a big win in Belgium.

After failing to impress Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr during the recent camping, Genk striker Cyriel Dessers has been left out of the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in November 2020.

Although Dessers played just little minutes in just one game from the two the Super Eagles played in October but Rohr felt he had seen enough not to continue with the Belgium-born striker for now.

In truth, the 25-year-old has not been the version of what he was last season when he scored 15 goals for Eredivisie side Heracles.

Since his move to Genk, the striker has struggled but he looks like he is getting over his struggles.

On Friday, October 30, he scored a good goal in the 48th minute as Genk thrashed Eupen 4-0 in a Belgian Pro League game.

A goal and assist from Onuachu

He was assisted by his compatriot Paul Onuachu who used his head to pass the ball to him before he unleashed a right-footed shot from outside the box.

Onuachu who was also left out of the recent Super Eagles squad was also on the scoresheet as he opened the scoring in the fifth minute from the penalty spot.

Alongside his assist, the 26-year-old was voted Man of the Match.

Unlike Dessers, Onuachu has been on form this season for Genk and already has nine goals but his absence from the recent Super Eagles is down to him not impressing Rohr during the last international window.

Onuachu played 67 minutes of Nigeria’s 1-0 loss to Algeria in October and failed to make any impact. He isn’t to be solely blamed for that. The Super Eagles do not play to Onuachu’s strength and Rohr has publicly stated that he is not going to set up the team like that.

Onuachu was only picked when Victor Osimhen pulled out of the squad and his immediate future with the Super Eagles is in doubt no matter how well he performs for his club.
