Wimbledon heartbreak for Murray
« on: July 08, 2012, 07:29:03 PM »
Andy Murray's bid to become the first Briton in 76 years to win the men's title at Wimbledon ended in gallant failure as he lost in four sets to Roger Federer.
Federer overcame a poor start to claim his record-equalling seventh Wimbledon title, winning 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 and Fred Perry remains the last Briton to win the men's title at the All England Club, back in 1936.
Murray had his chances, missing four chances to go a set and a break up, but the magnificent Federer raised his game when it mattered to equal Pete Sampras' record of seven titles.
Murray got off to a flyer, breaking Federer in the first game and after the Swiss broke back for 2-2, the battling Scot stepped up a gear.
At 4-4 he broke again, lashing a forehand just over a ducking Federer's head and in, and two unforced errors earned him the game. He served out to win his first set in a Grand Slam final.
At 2-2 and again at 4-4 in the second set Federer saved two break points, Murray so close with one backhand that fizzed half an inch long.
But at 6-5 up Federer fought back from 30-0 down and broke to level the match with a sublime volley.
The rain then fell at 1-1 in the third, causing a 40-minute delay whilst the roof was closed and when they returned, the match turned decisively Federer's way.
After an extraordinary 20-minute game, Murray lost his serve from 40-0 up to fall 2-4 behind, saving five break points but missing several chances to win it too.
Murray missed another break point for a 2-0 lead in the fourth and he paid the price at 2-2, Federer whipping a devastating cross-court backhand winner to break.
Federer was not going to be denied now, and he served out at 5-4, Murray's attempted pass just wide and the Swiss maestro - who is once again world No 1 - collapsed to the ground in relief.
