Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger apologised to the club's supporters after the Gunners lost 3-1 at home to Aston Villa on the first day of the Premier League.

Wenger's side were booed off at full-time, with chants for the Frenchman to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes on 2 September.

"What hurts me is to disappoint people who love the club," said Wenger.

Oscar and Frank Lampard scored first-half goals as Chelsea marked the start of Jose Mourinho's second spell as Blues manager with victory over Hull.

Lampard had an early penalty saved by Allan McGregor, before Kevin de Bruyne set up Oscar to slot the hosts ahead. McGregor again thwarted Lampard, but the England midfielder responded with a superb free-kick to double the lead.

Newly promoted Hull rallied after half-time but could not force their way back as Chelsea comfortably secured the win.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said the club will try to sign a new striker until the transfer window closes.

Mourinho, whose second spell as Blues manager started with a 2-0 win against Hull, has seen two bids for Wayne Rooney rejected by Manchester United.

"I won't name players who belong to other clubs. We go direct to the club," said Mourinho.
