176 Kidnap Victims Freed in Kwara After 6 Months in Captivity

The Kwara State Government has confirmed the release of 176 persons abducted during the February 3, 2026 assault on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.In a statement posted Wednesday on its official Facebook page, the government expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, security forces, and all stakeholders who contributed to the rescue effort, writing: “Alihamdulillaah and kudos… We are grateful.”The victims were seized when Boko Haram-linked extremists stormed the rural communities on motorcycles, unleashing a coordinated attack that lasted several hours. The assault, described as one of the deadliest in Kwara’s history, claimed more than 200 lives, left dozens injured, destroyed homes and businesses, and displaced many residents.Authorities say the successful rescue marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in the region.

NANS Issues Ogun Govt 72-Hour Ultimatum Over Abducted Students, Rising Insecurity

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has given the Ogun State Government and security agencies a 72-hour ultimatum to rescue five abducted students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, arrest those behind the killing of a student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, and address worsening insecurity around tertiary institutions in the state.NANS warned that failure to meet these demands would trigger sustained peaceful protests across Ogun State.Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat, Abeokuta, NANS Secretary-General Oladimeji Uthman (Dan Fodio) said students now live in fear due to persistent cases of kidnapping, armed robbery, cult violence, rape, and other criminal activities.“For far too long, students have continued to live in fear. The safety of lives and property on and around our campuses has been grossly threatened. Students can no longer move freely, attend lectures or return to their hostels without fear of attack,” Uthman said.NANS DemandsRescue of the five abducted Gateway Polytechnic students.Arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the murder of Ahmed Sekinat, a D.S. Adegbenro student killed in a robbery attack.A condolence visit to Sekinat’s family and another student receiving treatment for gunshot injuries at FMC Abeokuta.Increased patrols around campuses and establishment of permanent security posts in vulnerable student communities.Deployment of the Ogun State Anti-Violent Crime Team to tertiary institutions.Creation of a Security Agencies–Student Leaders Relations Forum for collaboration.Uthman lamented that previous attempts to engage security agencies through strategic meetings were ignored, frustrating efforts to find lasting solutions. While commending Governor Dapo Abiodun and Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for deploying a police aircraft to boost surveillance, NANS stressed that more decisive action was needed. The ultimatum comes after a series of violent incidents, including the July 27 killing of a D.S. Adegbenro student during a robbery in Eruku and the July 29 abduction of five Gateway Polytechnic students from a private hostel in Ipara Remo. The Ogun State Police Command has since activated tactical units to secure the release of the abducted students.
