Police intercepts Car Bomb yet to explode in Kano

Less than 24 hours after a major bomb blast rocked the ancient city of Kano, killing scores of people, police operatives from the Kano State police command,  yesterday, averted another major blast in Kano State when it discovered a bomb-laden Nissan vehicle.

The force public relations officer (FPRO), CSP Frank Mba made this known during yesterday’s press briefing on the ongoing military operation to free the school girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in Chibok, Borno State.

Mba also disclosed that the Sunday night bomb blast in the ancient city was carried out by a suicide bomber who died alongside four other persons.

According to Mba, the operatives, acting on intelligence, tracked and recovered an ash coloured Mitsubishi Station Waggon car, with registration number Kano – AE 756 GSW, loaded with assorted gas cylinders, one container of fuel and other electrical components of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

“The police in Kano today, 19th May, 2014, at about 9am averted what could have been another devastating bomb blast in the ancient city of Kano.

“Kano police operatives, acting on intelligence, tracked and recovered a Mitsubishi Station Waggon car, ash in colour, with registration number Kano – AE 756 GSW loaded with assorted gas cylinders, one container of fuel and other electrical components of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

“The vehicle was recovered at Tafawa Balewa Street, Nasarawa area of Kano State and has since been rendered safe by police bomb disposal experts,” he said.

Mba who further revealed that the Sunday night attack left five persons dead and seven others injured, said the police high command has commenced investigations on both incidents.

“It will be recalled that a suspected suicide bomber detonated an IED yesterday, 18th May, 2014, at about 9:30pm at Middle Road, off Gold Coast Street, Sabon Gari, Kano. The blast led to the death of five persons including the suspected suicide bomber. Seven persons were injured, four of them already treated and discharged while six vehicles were also damaged,” he said.

Meanwhile, the director general of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Mike Omeri, while giving an update on the military operations in the North-east, said the military operations in the area informed the warning on journalists and others against visiting Chibok in Borno.#

“We wish to inform all media organisations that the security situation around Chibok is still delicate. Presently, the affected location is an active crime scene and a military operational area.

“As much as the centre does not intend to restrict the activities of the media in the performance of their duty, it is strongly advised that any media organisation travelling to these areas must not take steps that will jeopardise the safety of their staff,” he explained.

On the threat to abduct school boys in Benue schools, Omeri said the report was the handiwork of mischief makers but noted that the security agencies were investigating the incident.
