The police in Ogun State on Wednesday in Abeokuta warned its personnel to be cautious about their manner and style of appearance and dressing while on duty.

The command said the rank and file as well as officers should avoid tattered dresses, indiscipline, uncouth and uncivilised behaviours.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, said this while speaking at a workshop organised for the personnel of the command.

Okoye said the policemen and officers of the force on the streets were the mirror with which the public measured the image of the entire police force.

He explained that the aim of the workshop was to improve of the public relations, image and professional conduct in the command.

Okoye, who was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, (Operations) Mohammed Abdulkadir, stressed that the command would do everything within its capacity to improve the image of the police.

He said, “It is important for all of you to know that you are representing the whole police force when you come in contact with members of the public and as such, you must behave well.

“Our duty is to serve and protect lives and properties in the most civilised manner possible and we can effectively do this without being rude to Nigerians.”

Immediate past chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in the state, who was also a resource person for the workshop, Mr Femi Dokunmu, stressed that it was important for all policemen to imbibe the culture of politeness in their relationship with members of the public.

Dokunmu educated participants at the workshop on areas such as public relations and image laundrying.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the IG was particularly concerned about how to sustain the new image of the police.
