‘Respect sovereignty of nations’ — AU condemns US military action in Venezuela
The African Union (AU) has expressed concern over the invasion of Venezuela by the United States.   Several explosions rocked Caracas early Saturday, with parts of the Venezuelan capital cut off from the electricity grid.   Hours later, US President Donald Trump announced that his country has successfully captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife.   In a communiqué on the situation, the AU said the developments pose a serious threat to regional and international peace.     The union expressed its “steadfast commitment to the fundamental principles of international law”, including respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rights of people to self-determination as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.   The AU said the escalating crisis must be addressed through peaceful means and urged restraint amid fears that the situation could spiral into wider conflict.   “The African Union underscores the importance of dialogue, peaceful settlement of disputes, and respect for constitutional and institutional frameworks, in a spirit of good neighbourliness, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence among nations,” the statement reads.   “The African Union emphasizes that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be sustainably addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.”   The AU also expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and reiterated its commitment to peace and stability across regions.
