Arewa, Ohanaeze Youths Rally Behind Dangote Refinery Against Sulphur Petrol Allegations
Youth leaders from northern and south-eastern Nigeria have condemned what they call unfounded attacks on the Dangote Refinery, dismissing claims that the facility imported petrol with excessive sulphur content and urging support for local refining to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on fuel imports. In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the Arewa Consultative Youth Forum, led by Mallam Kabiru Yusuf, and the Ohanaeze Youth Movement, led by Anderson Achilike, described the allegations as a “campaign of calumny” aimed at undermining a refinery critical to Nigeria’s energy sector. “We have noticed with utter dismay the renewed attacks by enemies of the nation to cast aspersions on the top local refinery revolutionizing Nigeria’s energy sector,” the statement read. The leaders specifically addressed reports alleging that the Dangote Refinery imported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with sulphur levels exceeding national standards. They cited findings from the UK-based Impact Investigators Platform (IIP), which reviewed shipping data, customs declarations, and refinery documents. IIP’s lead investigator, Raymond Neil, clarified, “Our analysis confirms that the shipment in question was a blending component, not a finished petrol product. "The claims of high-sulphur petrol imports are technically inaccurate, commercially implausible, and unsupported by verifiable evidence".The youth groups argued that such misinformation threatens efforts to bolster domestic energy production. “With this global confirmation, we call on detractors and enemies of our collective progress to desist from acts that sabotage Dangote, because we will not sit and watch them destroy what is in our country’s interest,” they stated. The Dangote Refinery, with its 650,000 barrels-per-day capacity, has significantly reduced Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel since its inauguration, according to the statement, making its success a matter of national importance. The leaders urged stakeholders to support local refineries to strengthen energy security and economic growth. The statement comes amid growing support for the refinery, with the League of African Ambassadors recently commending its contributions to Nigeria’s energy landscape. The youth leaders vowed to continue advocating for the protection of the facility against what they described as deliberate attempts to derail national progress.
