Senate begins screening of INEC chairman-nominee Joash Amupitan
The senate has commenced the screening of Joash Amupitan as the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).   Amupitan, a professor of law, walked into the upper legislative chamber at about 12:50pm alongside Ahmed Ododo, the Kogi state governor, and his family members.   He was led by Abubakar Lado, the presidential aide on national assembly matters (senate).   Lawmakers are currently grilling Amupitan on his plans for the electoral commission.     Amupitan began by reeling out his resume which had earlier been distributed to senators.   He informed the senate that he is currently the deputy vice chancellor of the University of Jos after spending six years as the dean of law.     He stated that he is the first professor of law from Kogi state and served as the pro-chancellor of the Joseph Ayo Babalola University.     On October 9, the council of state unanimously approved the nomination of Amupitan as the next chairman of INEC following the exit of Mahmood Yakubu.   On October 14, President Bola Tinubu formally requested the senate to confirm Amupitan.
