Wike Slams Peter Obi as 'Social Media President' at Abuja Road Commissioning
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike launched a scathing attack on Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi during a road commissioning ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, accusing him of politicizing governance issues and mismanaging Anambra State during his eight-year tenure as governor. Wike’s remarks, delivered before a crowd that included the citizen who proposed the road project, reignited a public feud with Obi, branding him a "social media president" unfit to lead Nigeria.“The road we are commissioning today, it was a responsible citizen who called our attention to it, and I’m happy that citizen is also here today,” Wike began, before turning his fire on Obi. “There is one social media man who calls himself a presidential candidate. He went to one school in FCT and said we did not provide toilets for them. Imagine. He plays politics with everything. When he was governor for eight years, did he develop the entire Anambra? Instead, he carried the state’s money and put it in his bank. His name is Peter Obi.”Wike didn’t stop there, alleging that Obi’s governance failures left Anambra’s subsequent leaders struggling. “And that is why his successors have been struggling. I challenge him to come out publicly and compare what he did for eight years in Anambra with what we have done in the FCT in just two years,” he declared. He further mocked Obi’s leadership credentials, stating, “Someone who cannot manage a political party as a presidential candidate is talking about managing a complex country like Nigeria. He will remain a social media president.”On October 10, Obi visited a school in Kuje, Abuja, highlighting the absence of basic amenities like toilets, sparking a war of words with Wike’s aides. The minister’s comments also reflect broader political tensions, as Obi’s “Obidient” movement and his 2023 electoral performance continue to challenge the ruling establishment ahead of 2027.Wike’s FCT administration has prioritized infrastructure, with the commissioned road part of over 50 projects since 2023. Yet, his remarks shifted focus to political sparring, accusing Obi of leveraging social media for clout rather than substance.
