Thomas Tuchel’s ‘ruthless’ style of management could get the best out of Chelsea’s star players.
That is the view of Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who believes the German will not accept mediocrity from his Blues players as he starts a new chapter of his managerial career.
Tuchel became the 15th manager of the Roman Abramovich era earlier this week and oversaw his first match in Wednesday’s goalless Premier League draw with Wolves.
The former PSG boss Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard on Tuesday, with the Blues board hailing the 47-year-old as one of Europe’s top coaches.
And Wright feels Tuchel’s blunt style could get the best out of Chelsea’s talented squad.
“If it works out how I believe it might work out for Chelsea because they’ve got the players to do it, Chelsea are going to be pretty dangerous if they get it right with him,” Wright told Optus Sport.
“Because what I like about him is he’s not really fussed about what they say upstairs, if they say something that makes him unhappy he will let them know.
“And he doesn’t care if the star players are giving him any kind of problem, he will let them know. He’s doing what he’s doing and it’s straight down the line.
“So if they buy into that then obviously we’re going to see a different kind of Chelsea with a different kind of ruthlessness and steeliness to them and intensity, and that could be quite frightening.”
Eyebrows were raised when Tuchel rested fan favourite Mason Mount for the Wolves clash on Wednesday, but he has insisted the 22-year-old is a big part of his plans going forward.
“I like what I have seen from Mason so far, his personality is amazing, he is such a nice guy, such a competitive guy, with such a lot of talent,” Tuchel said on Thursday.
“Most importantly, every game I have watched so far he has left his heart on the pitch, he cares for Chelsea 100 per cent, he gives 100 per cent every time he plays, and this is the best basis for big development.
“I’m very happy to have him around and I will not stop pushing him, I will not stop guiding him and I will not stop trusting him. There is nothing to worry about.”
