They last lost a World Cup qualifier when England inflicted a 5-1 thrashing on them in Munich in September 2001.
Germany fell behind in first-half stoppage-time as Enis Bardhi’s cross-cum-shot was turned in by former Inter Milan striker Goran Pandev.
Manchester City star Ilkay Gundogan levelled the score with a 63rd-minute penalty after Leroy Sane was fouled inside the box.
Timo Werner, who replaced his Chelsea teammate Kai Havertz in the 56th minute, then missed a golden opportunity to score Germany’s second goal.
Serge Gnabry played Gundogan through on goal and the midfielder squared the ball to Werner, who scuffed his shot wide with ten minutes to play.
And Joachim Low’s side were made to pay for that shocking miss as Arijan Ademi’s cut-back was poked home by Eljif Elmas in the 85th minute.
It goes from bad to worse for Werner, who has scored just two goals in his last 31 GAMES for club and country.
To make matters worse for the 25-year-old, Chelsea are reportedly prioritising the signing of a striker this summer with Erling Haaland being linked with a big-money move.
North Macedonia, who are ranked 65th in the world, will play at a major tournament for the first time in their 28-year history at Euro 2020 this summer.
The minnows are in a group with Austria, Ukraine and the Netherlands.
