England Women beat Latvia 20-0 tonight. That’s right, twenty-nil.

On a stunning night which saw the Lionesses deliver their biggest ever victory, striker Ellen White also became the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer, overtaking Kelly Smith’s record of 46 with a hat-trick.

That said, she was one of four hat-trick heroines as Sarina Wiegman’s women ran riot at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.

A first-half hat-trick from Beth Mead, two goals each from White and Lauren Hemp, and one from Ella Toone had the Lionesses eight goals up by the break.

But with a positive goal difference of 53 from six matches, this is not a team that takes its foot off the gas. After all, they won 10-0 in the reverse fixture.

In fact, they had 63 shots on goal tonight, more than one every 90 seconds.

Hemp and White would complete their trebles in the second-half, with the former also grabbing a fourth goal.

Meanwhile, Alessio Russo bagged three, Bethany England got two, and the rest were scored by Georgia Stanway, Jessica Carter, Jill Scott and Jordan Nobbs.

Of course, it goes without saying that Latvia’s infrastructure for women’s football is nothing compared to England’s.

But as the proverb goes, you can only beat what’s in front of you. And my word, did they do that.
