The 57-year-old was reported missing at around 5pm local time after jumping into the dam on his property, near the town of Rincao do Inferno.

Police and the fire department were called to the scene and Mr Becker’s body was found late in the evening.

Local authorities have confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious, and no foul play is suspected.

A number of Brazil’s top clubs on Thursday morning offered their condolences to the goalkeeper, the country’s number one, and his family.

Fluminense, where Alisson’s brother, Muriel, currently wished the Becker family strength, while Sao Paulo and Internacional also posted messages of support.

“The Fluminense Football Club deeply regrets the death of Jose Agostinho Becker, father of goalkeepers Muriel and Alisson,” posted Fluminense on Twitter.

“We wish all friends and family all the strength.”

Internacional, where both Alisson and Muriel began their professional careers, tweeted: “It is with great sadness that we received the news of the death of José Agostinho Becker, father of our former goalkeepers Alisson and Muriel.

“Clube do Povo wishes strength to family and friends in this moment of so much pain.”

Jose Becker was a big inspiration for both of his sons, having played as a goalkeeper himself at amateur level in Brazil.

And speaking in 2018, the Liverpool No.1 revealed how he was influenced by his father: “I have a family of goalkeepers.

“My father played for his work team, my mother played handball in school, and my grandfather played in amateur football.

“And after all this, came my brother playing and then I started to like it, too.”

Liverpool’s next game comes again Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday. The club have yet to comment on the news.
