Liverpool have been dealt a transfer blow with the news that they’re unlikely to make any further signings in the January window.

The Reds surprised the football world after announcing a deal worth up to £45million for PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo who will formally complete his move to Anfield on January 1.

Jurgen Klopp’s focus is now set to turn to signing a top-level midfield player, however according to Paul Joyce of The Times, that’s unlikely to happen this month with the club not making offers for two of their reported targets in Enzo Fernandes and Moises Caicedo.

Joyce is highly regarded for his Liverpool transfer stories, having been the first person to report the club’s interest in Darwin Nunez over the summer and Gakpo in recent days, but says that it’s set to be a dry January for the Reds on the transfer front.

Writing for The Times, Joyce said: “The likelihood remains that Liverpool’s incoming deals are now done for this transfer window, barring an unexpected opportunity presenting itself.

“Bids were not made for Benfica’s Enzo Fernández or Brighton’s Moisés Caicedo.

“There is no doubt that if Klopp is afforded one wish in 2023 it would be to sign Jude Bellingham.

“Should that play out then given how tight Alexander-Arnold was with the Dortmund midfielder at the World Cup, perhaps that would be viewed as his most important assist of all.”

Bellingham has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield, however the Borussia Dortmund star is unlikely to move on before the summer transfer window, meaning that Liverpool may have to bide their time if they’re to get their number one target.

While that pursuit is likely to continue until the summer, Fabrizio Romano has reported to the contrary, suggesting that a midfielder will remain the immediate priority for January after deciding against Argentina’s World Cup star Fernandez.
