Manchester United are ‘progressing’ with their pursuit of Raphael Varane as their next summer signing – after the club agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho.

The Red Devils look to have secured their first signing of the summer with Sancho set to seal a £73million transfer, pending a medical.

Varane, who is said to be unsettled at Real Madrid, is now the next target on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s wish list.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Old Trafford hierarchy are now looking to improve their defence and Varane has been identified as the top target.

The 28-year-old was part of France’s World Cup winning squad in 2018 and has also enjoyed huge success in his ten years in the Spanish capital.

His future at the Bernabeu is uncertain as he is about to enter the final year of his contract and Real are experiencing financial problems.

A move to Old Trafford has been mooted in the past and former England and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell believes the Red Devils would be wise to go all out to get Varane.

“Varane is really good. There are shouts of him going to Manchester United because it’s not clear what’s going on at Real Madrid,” Campbell told talkSPORT.

“If they get him that’s a really good buy. He’s quick, he can play football, he’s been there and done it, he knows how to get through big games.

“He knows what it means to play for big clubs. If he can handle Real Madrid he can handle Man United.”
