Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is to join Barcelona on a free transfer.

The Arsenal striker is undergoing a medical with the Spanish giants after agreeing a pay cut to make the move to the Camp Nou.

The move looked dead earlier on Monday but was reignited late on deadline day and is set to be completed ahead of the 11pm deadline.

A departure from north London was always a case of when and not if, after he was stripped of the captaincy and frozen out by Mikel Arteta.

The Gabon international returned home early from the Africa Cup of Nations due to health reasons but has not played for Arsenal since being disciplined by the club in December.

It’s a remarkable ending for both parties, especially given the impact Aubameyang had at the club since signing from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018.

22 Premier League goals in back-to-back seasons saw the Gabon captain secure the golden boot and the FA Cup in the 2019/20 season.

He was then given a new three-year contract in September 2020, reported to be worth £350,000-a-week.

However, his form since then has not reflected his wages and alongside the ‘disciplinary breach’, Arsenal felt no choice but to end ties with their captain.

Other clubs had also been interested in Aubameyang such as Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, but the Gunners striker was not keen on the move.

With the 32-year-old now gone, and no new strikers set to arrive on deadline day, Arteta will have to rely on Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah for the rest of the season.

If the club are to finish in the Champions League this season, they will desperately need both forwards firing soon, having scored just three league goals between them in 20 games.
