A Teemu Pukki stunner ensured Newcastle remain winless this season as Norwich snatched a 1-1 draw from the ten-man Magpies.

Ciaran Clark was sent off inside the opening ten minutes, but the Toon were still able to take the lead when Callum Wilson netted from the spot.

Pukki equalised in the 79th minute with a thunderous left-footed volley, taking the roof off the net and the Norwich end simultaneously.

Nevertheless, just as the Canaries were in need of a 12th man during a thrilling finish, famous owner Delia Smith was pictured sleeping through the dying moments.

Alan Shearer joked ‘wake up, Delia’ on commentary, but in fairness, it was a 264-mile trip for the 80-year-old – which is some effort.

Her slumber was probably for the best as Norwich spurned a glorious chance to win the match at the death when Pierre Lees-Melou was denied by Martin Dubravka.

While Delia has owned Norwich for 25 years, as of last weekend, Newcastle’s mega-rich owners are the newest in the Premier League – but at this rate, they might be watching Championship football next season.

In a true relegation six-pointer, a win felt essential for the Magpies, who are yet to taste victory after 14 games of the 2021/22 campaign.

New manager Eddie Howe has a mountainous task on his hands – and it wasn’t made easier by a rash Clark decision on nine minutes.

The Irishman conceded possession to Pukki and then brought the Norwich striker down as he raced through on goal, leaving the referee with no choice.

Norwich dominated the ball but couldn’t create anything against their ten-man opponents, who took a surprise lead with a helping hand from VAR.

Video replays showed Billy Gilmour handled in the box and Wilson just about squeezed his spot-kick past Tim Krul.

However, a precious three points would be denied by Pukki’s one and only shot on goal, as the Finland international plucked one out the sky to ensure the spoils were shared.
