Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney did not hold back when commenting on some of his former Everton teammates at the start of his career.

Making the breakthrough as a 16-year-old at Goodison Park, netting his first goal against Arsenal, Rooney became the Premier League’s youngest ever scorer in 2002.

Playing two full seasons with the Blues, he left to join Man United in 2004, becoming the Red Devils’ record scorer with 253 goals.

The 37-year-old, has, however, surprised fans, admitting he felt amazed at the low standard of some of his Everton teammates.

“It’s mad how quickly things changed. For me to go in with Duncan [Ferguson], [Alan] Stubbs – all of them that I grew up watching,” he told Toffees TV.

“To then go and play with them, training with them every day, so quickly I remember thinking, ‘These are crap’.

“Obviously not all of them, but some of the players I was thinking, ‘what’s going on here?’

“I couldn’t believe how bad some of them were. I remember thinking ‘I’m better than all these players’.

“That’s not disrespecting to them players but some of them just weren’t good enough and should never have played for Everton.”

The Man United star later re-joined his boyhood club in 2017 for one season before leaving for MLS, and taking in a spell at Derby County before becoming a coach.

Despite his tongue-in-cheek comments, Rooney is still regarded as a legend at Goodison Park.

Having come through the youth academy, he netted 17 goals in his first spell, and later added another 11 to his tally during his second stint, when captaining the side.
