Generator fumes kill newly wed couple

Tragedy struck in Ikot Omin, a suburb of Calabar, Cross River State capital, last Sunday when newly married couple along side the wife’s younger sister were reportedly killed by generator fumes few days after packing into their own house.

It was learnt that the late couple, Bassey Effiong, 27, his 21-year-old wife, Glory, and her younger sister, Emem, were said to have packed into their uncompleted house shortly after their wedding.

The family met their untimely death last Sunday when they turned on their generating set and placed it on the corridor close to the room where they were sleeping.

However, fumes from the generating set penetrated into the room and suffocated the couple and the wife’s 16-year-old younger sister.


Mike, a neighbour to the couple said, “When he got married, he decided to work on one of the rooms and moved in, while hoping to gradually complete the remaining parts of the house.”

They were discovered dead around 5 pm on Monday by Bassey’s uncle, David Ekanem, a naval office who is currently serving in the state.

“I knocked several times on the door but there was no answer, so I had to force the door open. It was then I saw my nephew and his wife along with the young girl lying dead,” the Naval officer said.

Spokesman of the Cross River State Police Command, Hogan Bassey, who confirmed the incident said the matter was reported by the naval officer and the bodies had been evacuated to the Infectious Disease Hospital mortuary, Edgerly Road, Calabar.
