Adegoke, yesterday said no fewer than 240,000 people die annually in Nigeria as a result of insufficient physical activities.

Adegoke, an Associate Professor of Physiotherapy at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, disclosed this in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, during a public lecture to mark the World Physiotherapy Day organized by the state chapter of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP).

In his lecture titled, “The ageing process, disease and physical activities,” the don expressed concern over the prevalence of chronic diseases in the country arising from failure of many Nigerians to

engage in regular physical exercises.

Adegoke said diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity which, according to him, are now common diseases in the country are often caused by sedentary lifestyles.

He said, “Insufficient physical activity/sedentary living has been identified as one of the leading causes of chronic diseases. World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics indicate that between 66 and 80 percent of all deaths from chronic diseases occur in developing countries and Nigeria is one of them”.
