Erosion Destroys 41 Houses In Delta Community

No fewer than 41 houses have reportedly been destroyed in Illah community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State following perilous erosion menace which also left seven persons feared killed.

 As it were, the gully erosion ravaging the entire community with most of the houses destroyed, has led to its occupants relocating to neighbouring communities.

 While calling on the State government to come to their aid, an Elder statesman in the area and renowned physical planer, Mr. Joseph Kadinma, disclosed that all the streets in the community and environs have become impassable, adding that motorists including pedestrians hardly walk along the road following its massive dilapidation.

 He noted with dissatisfaction the inability of Oshimili North Local Government Council officials to carry out meaningful developments in the area, pointing out that the people of Illah have been suffering the absence of basic amenities.

 Leadership checks revealed that the problem of the present gully erosion ravaging the community might be deepened as the state government, through the Commissioner for Works, Mr. Funkekeme Solomon, said it requires N2billion to construct befitting drainages.

 Worse hit is the poor drainage system and poor erosion control in the community with over sixty percent of the residential buildings adversely affected, while it constitutes serious threats to lives and properties.

 Mr. Kadinma lamented that due to the lack of drainage system the people of the area might be faced with difficulties of harvesting their crops this year 2013.
