Watch out for Expendables 3

From 1984 to 2004, Kelsey Grammer played everyone's favorite befuddled television psychiatrist on 203 episodes of "Cheers" and 11 full seasons of "Frasier." That might not seem like good training to become an action hero — especially now that he's 58 years old — but that's not stopping Grammer: The actor's rep has confirmed with Yahoo Movies that he is, indeed, joining the cast of "The Expendables 3," the next installment in Sylvester Stallone's franchise starring a fistful of AARP-eligible tough guys.

Grammer is reported to be playing Bonaparte, a famous mercenary who is recruited to join the Expendables for their latest mission. Early reports had Stallone and his producers recruiting Nicolas Cage for the role, but Cage has opted to use his talents elsewhere. Instead, Grammer will be on hand to demonstrate that he's a good hand in a fight.

But is it time for him to start pumping iron?

It says a lot that Grammer is one of the bigger casting surprises in a movie that already features Mel Gibson, Harrison Ford, and Wesley Snipes, along with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Antonio Banderas, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, and Terry Crews. It's anyone's guess at this point if Grammer is supposed to drop weight and get buff for "Expendables 3," which might be the stuff of a movie in itself if Stallone and company want to go that route.

While "The Expendables 3" finds Grammer playing a full-on action role for the first time, he played a tough and unscrupulous politician on the Starz series "Boss," and he's portrayed bad guys of various stripes, including Ebenezer Scrooge and the vengeful Sideshow Bob on "The Simpsons." He's also had some experience in big-budget action sagas; Grammer appeared in 2006's "X-Men: The Last Stand" and will be seen in 2014's "Transformers: Age of Extinction." And he even has another picture with Stallone in the works, a drama called "Reach Me" that's also slated for a 2014 release.

So if you've always wanted to see a two-fisted action hero who complains about the wine being served with dinner, Grammer may just be making your dreams come true in "The Expendables 3." We'll all find out for sure when the movie arrives in theaters August 2014.
