Fire Guts YABATECH Arts Complex

The Art Complex of the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos was yesterday gutted by mysterious fire, destroying important documents and past question papers and scripts in its wake.

 Our correspondent learnt that the fire that enveloped the entire four storey building was noticed at about 10. 00 am in the morning, thereby causing confusion in the college.

 An eyewitness said,” We just started noticing smoke coming out from the Art complex and it was increasing and increasing so we had to rush to the complex. When we got there we discovered that it was fire. We have to raise alarm and called fire service to put out the fire.

 “We could not really do much because the place is underground and the fire was serious because the place is stocked with lots of papers. You can see the damage done to the building is much”.

 When contacted, the school publicity Officer who simply gave his name as Mr Adams initially said he was not aware of the fire incidents but later agreed it was a minor fire incident, saying there was no cause for alarm.

 Confirming the fire incident, the Director, Lagos State Fire Service Mr Rasaq Fadipe said he got a distress call about the fire at about 10:38 am and had to deploy fire fighting officials immediately to put out the fire.

 “We succeeded in putting out the fire 50 minutes later. The first challenge was that we could not gain access into the complex. We had to use our concrete breaking apparatus to remove some structure to get there,” he said.

 Fadipe said though valuable documents and some parts of the building were damaged, it would have been worse if the state fire service had not intervened.
