Student Stabs Best Friend To Death After Catching Him Cheating With Girlfriend

Rahul Gupta, 24, a biomedical engineering graduate student at George Washington University is accused of stabbing 23-year-old Mark Waugh, a Law student early Sunday morning after a weekend of drinking and birthday celebrations in Montgomery County, Md.

Rahul had been out drinking and celebrating his 24th birthday with friends. But the good time took a turn for the worse when Gupta, Mark and Gupta’s girlfriend returned to her apartment in nearby Silver Spring, MD.

Just before 3:30 a.m. on Oct. 13, police were called to the apartment. There they found blood on the walls and Mark unresponsive and suffering from what appeared to be cutting wounds. They could see Mr. Gupta sitting down at the base of the bed like he was in despair, Capt. Jones said.

Waugh was pronounced dead at the apartment.

 

But Gupta and his girlfriend gave differing accounts of what happened.

Gupta told police, ” I walked in on my girlfriend cheating on me. My girl and buddy were cheating. I walked in on them cheating and I killed my buddy.”

According to the girlfriend, she didn’t remember anything after the three of them did shots at the apartment, at the end of their evening out. She said Gupta woke her up yelling and told her to call 911.
 
“We’re still trying to piece together what happened in that apartment,” Montgomery County Police Capt. Jim Daly said.

The victim’s mother, Nancy Waugh, revealed that Gupta and her son had been best friends since meeting at Langley High School in McLean, Va. “It’s just a shock. We can’t believe it,” she said
