Subsidy removal: Reno Omokri discredits NLC planned strike over support for Obi

A public affairs commentator, Reno Omokri, has said the
Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) did not have any moral justification to declare
a nationwide over the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu.

Recall that the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, had
announced that there would be a nationwide strike starting from Wednesday if
the President refuses to return to the status quo.

But, Omokri said an NLC that once endorsed Peter Obi of the
Labour Party could not ask Nigerians to go on strike over a policy Obi himself
promised to implement if elected.

“You cannot have a Nigerian Labour Congress whose executive
members endorsed Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate, asking
Nigerians to go on strike because President Tinubu has refused to reverse fuel
subsidy removal, which is exactly what Peter Obi said he would do immediately
after he was sworn in,” he said.

According to Omokri, the leaders of NLC must first purge
themselves of their National Executive Council members who endorsed Obi’s
presidential ambition.

This, Omokri said, became necessary if the planned
nationwide strike should not be perceived as a continuation of Peter Obi’s
political campaign.

“If the NLC wants enough credibility to mobilise Nigerians
to join their strike, they should first purge themselves of their National
Executive Council members who endorsed Peter Obi. Until they do that, this
their planned nationwide strike will look like it is a continuation of Peter
Obi’s political campaign,” he submitted.
