NDLEA arrests 68 persons and seize over 4.96 tons of dope

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Borno said had arrested 68 suspected drug peddlers and seized over 4.96 tons of illicit drugs substances from January to November this year.

NDLEA Commandant in the state, Mr Ona Ogilegwe, stated this in an interview with newsmen on Thursday in Maiduguri, that the suspects were arrested in various raids and mop-up conducted by the agency.

Ogilegwe said that the illicit substances including cannabis, rephenol, cough syrup, diazepam, cocaine and heroin were seized from the drug traffickers Others illicit substances included suck and die rubber solution, forte-win injection and tramol among others were seize under period review.

He said that the agency had secured 12 convictions and 39 suspects were counsel while 17 others were awaiting trial.

Ogilegwe said that two among the suspects were arrested yesterday in Trailer Park in Bulunkutu area of the state with 2.2 tons of cannabis sativa popularly known as Indian hemp.

He explained that the arrest was the highest in the history of NDLEA in the state adding that the suspects were arrested following intelligent report by men of the command from Edo state.

He noted that the suspects include Adebayo Sunday a 42 year old from Osun state and Abu Imoah from Auchi.


He said that the arrest also led to the discovery of a drug factory in Pompomari Baga Road of Maiduguri.

The Commandant said that when the men of the command mop-up the drug factory, they discovered some large quantity of cannabis sativa but no arrest was made during exercise.

According to him, men of the command had engaged in real combat with hoodlums in the area adding that the command would relent on its war against illicit drug sale in the state. “Yesterday alone we seize about 2.2 tons of cannabis sativa which we have been monitoring from Edo state to Maiduguri since last week.

“We went to Damaturu to make phone call and learnt that there is a vehicle that is conveying this illicit substance, so we intensify or surveillance activities with our men working day and night in various black spots.

“According to the driver of the lorry, he told us that this was his second time of bringing such huge amount of substances to the state. He also told that he was directed to see a man called Lu. G.

“We are targeting drug dealers who are crucial in the supply chain because if we are able to cut source of supply, the end users will have no place to buy,” he added.
