Dance Centre Kenya’s Nutcracker – a photo essay

Kenya’s pre-eminent and most diverse dance school is committed to teaching talented dancers, irrespective of their ability to pay for training. The photographer Luis Tato watched the company rehearse and perform the Nutcracker, the classical ballet traditionally performed at Christmas, at the Kenya National Theatre in Nairobi

Bravian Mise hits a series of grand jetés – leaping like a gazelle across the cramped living room – and pirouettes during an exhaustive rehearsal at his home in a Kenyan slum.

The 13-year-old has been practising ballet for four years and is among 100 or so children who have been rehearsing for months to perform Tchaikovsky’s Christmastime favourite The Nutcracker in Kenya’s capital Nairobi.
