Police Arraign Togolese For House Breaking, Theft

The police on Tuesday arraigned a Togolese, Joseph Hamanzuru, 32, of Old Customs Quarters, Mararaba, in a Grade 1 Area Court, Aso Pada, Mararaba for house breaking and theft.

The prosecutor, PC Friday Adaji, told the court that on Dec. 4, Onu Ogbonnaya of same address lodged a complaint against the accused at the ‘A’ Division Police Station, Mararaba.

Adaji alleged that on Nov. 24 at about 8 a.m., Ogbonnaya left his house in the company of his family members for Sunday worship.

He came back at about 3 p.m. to discover that the accused, a carpenter, had broken into his house through the ceiling and carted away his property.

``The accused stole laptop, clothing, Etisalat phone and five wrappers, all valued at N300,000.

``After committing the crime, the accused escaped to an unknown destination until on Dec. 4 when he was arrested.

``The offence contravenes the provisions of sections 349 and 287 of the Penal Code which attract six years in prison or option to pay a fine or both,’’ Adaji said.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding judge, Mr Albert Maga, refused to grant the accused bail and ordered that he should be remanded in Keffi prison till the next adjourned date.

Maga adjourned the case to Dec. 19 for continuation of hearing. (NAN)
