Kogi State Police Command on Saturday  confirmed the death  a police constable, Mr Tanko Paul who was shot dead during  bank raids by armed robbers in Kabba, Kogi State.

Also confirmed was  the arrest of Rasaki Bello and Bayo Femi  who were suspected members of an armed robbery gang.

They are currently  assisting the police in their investigations.

The State Police Commissioner, Mr Saidu Madawaki, who confirmed this to pressmen, stated that the police put up a stiff resistance against the robbers during the raid.

He  explained that at about 1.30p.m on Friday, unidentified gunmen in large number attacked two first generation banks in Kabba  simultaneously with improvised Explosive Devices and heavy gunfire.

The police boss informed that the police on duty at the Kabba divisional police headquarters resisted the armed robbers from advancing towards  the police station.

He disclosed  that as a result of the resistance put up by the police, the robbers were unable to succeed at one of the banks but managed to cart away unspecified amount of money from the other bank.

The police commissioner stated  that during the exchange of fire,  two armed robbers were shot dead behind the police divisional headquarters, adding that the robbers took away  one of the dead corpses.

He  noted that one civilian was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while three police officers were shot. One of them was confirmed dead while two others were seriously wounded.

He explained that the manhunt by the police led to the arrest of two of the suspected armed robbers and the recovery of a Toyota Camry Saloon car.
He stated that in the process, many of the suspected robbers escaped with bullet wounds.

The police commissioner said he visited  the scene of the  incident and the injured policemen  at the General Hospital in Kabba.

Items recovered from the robbery scene included a Toyota Camry with registration Number Lagos BS 612 AKD and two motorcycles. Tribune News
