River State University (RSUST) expels 588 Students
« on: January 23, 2014, 09:35:29 AM »
The Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) said it expelled no fewer than 558 students, following their poor academic performances.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Barineme Fakae, who disclosed this at the 32nd matriculation of the institution in Port Harcourt, said that the students were pushed out at the end of the 2012/2013 academic session.

Fakae further said that RSUST has zero tolerance for examination malpractices and other social vices, warning that the institution’s senate would not hesitate to sanction erring students.

He stated that a total of 2,955 students were admitted into the university, out of the over 10,000 candidates that applied, even as he urged the new students to attend lectures always and shun membership of secret cults.

The Vice Chancellor said, “Inculcate the habit of using the library and ensure that you attend lectures at all times, as absenteeism may result in failure and consequently lead to Withdrawal of Academic Failure (WAF).

“For your information, at the end of last session (2012/2013), 588 students were asked to withdraw due to academic failure.

“We do not compromise standards because our vision and values must continue to be held in high esteem,” the VC said, just as he congratulated the new intakes on their success in the JAMB and post UME.

Giving a breakdown of the 2,955 intakes for the 2013/2014 academic session, Prof Fakae disclosed that 159 were admitted into the Faculty of Agriculture, Engineering (702), Environmental Sciences (209), Law (221), and Management Sciences (733).

Continuing, the VC said 507 students gained admission into the Faculty of Science, while 424 were admitted into the Faculty of Technical and Science Education.

Fakae further said that the university encourages students to be ICT compliant, as most businesses in the institution are online, even as he urged the new students to acquaint themselves with the RSUST code of conduct, which he said “is properly spelt out in the students’ handbook”.
