Strike Continues, Poly Lecturers Vows
« on: February 06, 2014, 09:33:38 AM »
The Academic Stafff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has vowed to continue with its ongoing strike until issues it has raised are addressed by federal the government.

The development was sequel to an emergency meeting of ASUP NEC held yesterday in Abuja.

ASUP’s national publicity secretary, Mr Clement Chirman, who disclosed this in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday, also stated that the strike would remain in force until the union’s 13 points demands are met.

He said, “The union noted that of the four issues federal government agreed to address in July, not all have been addressed.

The union stressed that the issues selected for immediate address by the government in July 2013 do not in any way substitute the 13 points demand earlier tabled but were to take care of the exigencies of that moment and to prepare ways for further discussions on other demands of ASUP.”

“Governments failure to address those issues at that time indicates enough insincerity and that led to the resumption of the strike in october, 2013. Even if government had addressed the four issues and had failed to attend to the other demand that formed the 13 points by the end of July 2013, the union would have still resumed the suspended strike.”

“It is unfortunate that government is making the public to believe that the strike is all about the implementation of CONTISS 15 Migration. This is a strategy that is aimed at confusing the demands of the union and to put it in bad light.”

“ASUP resolves that the ongoing strike will continue indefinitely until all the demands of the union are met. All chapters that could not join the strike or suspended because of their chapters peculiarity have been directed to rejoin the strike immediately.”

While the union sympathises with the plight of students, he said it expresses strong desire in making the sector work for the benefit of all and calls for understanding from students, parents and the Nigerian public.
