Nigeria Police Begins Promotion Exercise for Long-Serving Inspectors to ASP Rank

The Nigeria Police Force has launched a promotion exercise targeting long-serving Inspectors for elevation to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), with a deadline of August 29, 2025, for the submission of required documentation. The initiative, announced by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), aims to advance the careers of officers who have demonstrated dedication and competence, as part of ongoing reforms to professionalize the force.According to an internal directive obtained by SaharaReporters, the IGP has instructed all police departments, formations, and state commands to compile comprehensive nominal rolls of Inspectors promoted in 2017 and 2018 and confirmed between 2019 and 2020. The directive, issued by the Force Secretary in Abuja, mandates that these records be arranged by seniority and include duly signed Annual Performance Evaluation Reports (APER forms) for 2023, 2024, and 2025. This exercise follows the Police Service Commission’s (PSC) recent approval of promotions for senior officers, including 12 Commissioners of Police to Assistant Inspectors General (AIGs), 16 Deputy Commissioners to Commissioners, and 27 Assistant Commissioners to Deputy Commissioners. Additionally, 145 Chief Superintendents of Police were elevated to Assistant Commissioners, covering both general duty officers and specialists from units such as the Airwing and Medical Unit. The promotion process is designed to reward merit and seniority, ensuring that only eligible officers benefit. The IGP has emphasized that the exercise is part of a broader manpower development policy to boost morale and enhance operational efficiency within the force. A separate PSC announcement confirmed the promotion of 4,708 Inspectors to unconfirmed ASPs and 33 to Senior Inspectors following a nationwide board interview, underscoring the scale of the ongoing reform efforts. Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police have been tasked with chairing Departmental Selection Boards in their respective zones to ensure a transparent and fair process. The directive specifies that only listed Inspectors under each zone’s jurisdiction should be interviewed, building on a similar exercise conducted earlier in 2025 for Inspectors recruited in 2000, which took place between May 19 and May 30. The Nigeria Police Force has urged all relevant commands and formations to adhere strictly to the August 29 deadline to ensure timely processing of promotions. This move has been welcomed by officers, though some have called for broader reforms, including addressing welfare concerns highlighted during recent protests by retired personnel. The promotion exercise is seen as a step toward strengthening the Nigeria Police Force, with the IGP reiterating a commitment to fostering a professional and motivated workforce capable of meeting modern policing challenges.
