Congo Appeals for Nigeria’s Backing in UNESCO Director-General Bid

The Republic of Congo has called on Nigeria to support its candidate, Firmin Edouard Matoko, in the race for Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The request was made by Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso during a diplomatic meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.Makosso presented Matoko as a seasoned diplomat with over three decades of UNESCO experience, including roles as Assistant Director-General and head of multiple regional offices. “Matoko’s expertise positions him to lead UNESCO effectively,” Makosso stated, seeking Nigeria’s endorsement to strengthen Congo’s bid.Vice President Shettima praised the leadership of Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, calling him a “key stabiliser” in Africa’s Great Lakes region, and affirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening ties with Congo. He assured Makosso that the request would be relayed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for review. The Congolese delegation also thanked Nigeria and the Rochas Foundation for providing free education to Congolese orphans, highlighting the growing partnership between the two nations. The visit, reported by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to President Tinubu, included discussions on enhancing cooperation in education, culture, and regional stability.
