Release Corps Member’s Discharge Certificate, Falana Tells NYSC

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has called on the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to immediately release the discharge certificate of Corps Member Ushie Rita Uguamaye whose certificate was withheld following allegations of critical remarks against the government. The demand, made public on August 10, 2025, comes amid growing concerns over the NYSC’s handling of disciplinary actions and their implications for free speech.Falana’s call follows a viral social media claim, which the NYSC has since debunked, asserting that Rita’s certificate was withheld due to her failure to attend the mandatory April 2025 biometrics clearance, not for political reasons. The NYSC clarified that Rita is among 131 Corps Members whose certificates were withheld for valid disciplinary reasons, with her service year extended by two months in line with the NYSC Bye-Laws. However, Falana argues that the withholding of the certificate raises questions about transparency and fairness, urging the NYSC to release it promptly to avoid perceptions of victimization.“The NYSC must uphold the principles of fairness and due process,” Falana stated, emphasizing that any disciplinary action must be clearly communicated and justifiable. He warned that withholding certificates without transparent justification could be seen as an attempt to suppress free expression, a right enshrined in Nigeria’s constitution. Falana’s intervention has reignited debates about the balance between institutional discipline and individual rights, with many advocating for clearer guidelines on NYSC’s disciplinary processes. The NYSC, in a statement on August 10, 2025, reiterated that Rita’s case is a standard procedure for non-compliance and not politically motivated. “The extension of service is a longstanding tradition within the NYSC and should not be politicized,” the statement read, urging the public to approach the matter with understanding. The organization emphasized its commitment to equal treatment and adherence to its constitutional mandate. Falana, however, insists that the NYSC must provide concrete evidence of Rita’s non-compliance and expedite the release of her certificate to restore public confidence. He has threatened legal action if the issue remains unresolved, citing potential violations of Rita’s fundamental rights.
