Ifa Religion Council Urges Tinubu to Declare National Holidays for Isese Festival

The International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR) has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to formally recognize Isese adherents by declaring August 20 and 21 as national public holidays. In a statement issued on Wednesday in Ibadan, Oyo State, ahead of the 2025 Isese Day celebration, ICIR President Fayemi Fakayode emphasized the need for national recognition of the traditional Yoruba religion.Fakayode noted that Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, and Osun states have already declared August 20 a work-free day for this year’s Isese Day and urged governors of Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta to follow suit. He also called for government support to fund cultural festivals, protect shrines and sacred lands, and include Isese practitioners in cultural councils, similar to provisions for Muslims and Christians.“Isese is the foundation of Yoruba and African identity, promoting morality, unity, and respect for nature,” Fakayode said, highlighting its role in fostering values like honesty and hard work. He urged the Federal Government to address religious inequality by granting formal recognition to Isese adherents.Commending South-West governors for their support, Fakayode encouraged federal investment in cultural sites to enhance revenue and community development, emphasizing that celebrating Isese preserves heritage and strengthens cultural pride across Nigeria.
