Gove Umo Eno Declares Minimum ₦1 Million Monthly Salary for Political Aides

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has revealed that none of his political aides earns less than ₦1 million monthly, underscoring his administration’s commitment to fair compensation for public service. The announcement, made during a public address in Uyo, has sparked discussions about governance and remuneration policies in the state.Governor Eno’s statement highlights his focus on ensuring that political appointees are well-compensated, reflecting the high cost of living and the demands of their roles. “None of my political aides earns less than ₦1 million monthly,” Eno declared, emphasizing that his administration prioritizes motivating its workforce to deliver effective service to the people of Akwa Ibom. The disclosure comes amid ongoing debates about public sector wages in Nigeria, where economic challenges and inflation have strained household incomes. Eno’s administration has been noted for its efforts to improve infrastructure and social services, and the governor’s announcement signals an intent to maintain high morale among his team to support these initiatives. While the governor did not specify the number of aides receiving this minimum salary, the statement has drawn mixed reactions. Some residents have praised the move as a step toward valuing public servants, while others have raised concerns about the affordability of such salaries given the state’s budgetary constraints. Akwa Ibom, one of Nigeria’s oil-rich states, benefits from significant revenue allocations, including ₦660.349 billion shared among states in July 2025, as reported by the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).The announcement has also prompted calls for transparency regarding the total cost of maintaining political aides and how it aligns with the state’s broader development goals. Governor Eno, who assumed office in 2023, is yet to provide further details but reiterated his commitment to balancing welfare with fiscal responsibility.
