Nigerians Burn N1.3 Trillion on Petrol in June Amid Power Woes

Nigerians shelled out approximately N1.3 trillion on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, in June 2025 to fuel their vehicles and electricity generators, according to the latest data from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). The staggering expenditure, driven by an average pump price of N900 per litre, underscores the country's heavy reliance on imported fuel and chronic power supply issues, even as local refining efforts intensify. The NMDPRA's PMS truckout report for June revealed that a total of 1.44 billion litres of petrol were distributed across the nation's states, highlighting a daily consumption average of about 48 million litres. Urban hubs dominated demand, with Lagos leading the pack by consuming 205.7 million litres valued at N185.1 billion. Ogun State followed with 88.7 million litres costing N79.8 billion, while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) accounted for 77.5 million litres worth N69.8 billion. Oyo State rounded out the top four with 72.8 million litres at N65.5 billion. At the other end of the spectrum, less populated or rural states received minimal allocations. Jigawa had the lowest uptake at 9.4 million litres (N8.5 billion), trailed by Ebonyi with 10.5 million litres (N9.5 billion), Yobe at 11.7 million litres (N10.5 billion), and Bayelsa with 11.9 million litres (N10.7 billion).Breaking down consumption by geopolitical zones, the South-West emerged as the biggest user, guzzling 452.9 million litres valued at N407.7 billion. Beyond the major states, Osun consumed 35.5 million litres (N31.9 billion), Ondo 35.1 million litres (N31.5 billion), and Ekiti 15.3 million litres (N13.7 billion). The North-Central zone ranked second with 247.4 million litres worth N222.4 billion, led by the FCT's N69.8 billion share. Niger followed at N36.6 billion for 40.7 million litres, Kwara with N31.3 billion (34.8 million litres), Benue N23.1 billion (25.7 million litres), Nasarawa N22.6 billion (25.1 million litres), Kogi N21.7 billion (24.1 million litres), and Plateau N17.5 billion (19.4 million litres). In the North-West, 230 million litres were consumed at a total value of N207 billion, with Kano topping the list at N61.4 billion, Kaduna at N38.8 billion, Sokoto N33.3 billion, Kebbi N27.3 billion, Katsina N22.3 billion, Zamfara N15.3 billion, and Jigawa bringing up the rear at N8.5 billion. The South-South region expended N202.9 billion on 224.9 million litres, spearheaded by Delta's N61.6 billion, Rivers N40.1 billion, Edo N38.8 billion, Akwa Ibom N30.4 billion, Cross River N20.7 billion, and Bayelsa N10.7 billion.Further north, the North-East used 152.8 million litres valued at N137.5 billion, with Adamawa leading at N51.2 billion, Bauchi N27.9 billion, Gombe N17.3 billion, Borno N17 billion, Taraba N13.6 billion, and Yobe N10.5 billion. The South-East recorded the nation's lowest regional consumption at 132.7 million litres (N119.6 billion), topped by Anambra's 40.5 million litres (N36.5 billion), Imo 30.6 million litres (N27.6 billion), Enugu 27.4 million litres (N24.7 billion), Abia 23.7 million litres (N21.3 billion), and Ebonyi N9.5 billion. The figures reflect ongoing challenges post-fuel subsidy removal in 2023, which has seen petrol prices fluctuate between N885 and N925 per litre in June, amid competition from local refineries like Dangote and efforts to reduce import dependency. However, with Nigeria's unreliable grid power forcing widespread use of generators, the N1.3 trillion spend highlights the urgent need for improved energy infrastructure to ease the burden on households and businesses.
