NANS Urges FG to Shield Dangote Refinery from Alleged Sabotage Plots

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Federal Government to urgently protect the Dangote Refinery from alleged sabotage by vested interests threatened by its role in stabilizing Nigeria’s fuel supply. In a statement by NANS Senate President Usman Adamu Nagwaza, the group raised concerns over a dispute with the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), warning that unresolved tensions could trigger a nationwide fuel crisis.NANS emphasized that union membership should be voluntary, not coerced, and condemned threats of a national shutdown as “unacceptable” amid Nigeria’s economic recovery. “Any disruption to the refinery’s operations, including strikes by tanker drivers or sabotage of assets, risks reversing the progress made in stabilizing fuel supply,” Nagwaza said, praising the Tinubu administration’s efforts to bolster the economy. The student body cited intelligence reports alleging that oil cartels, previously profiting from fuel subsidy scams and smuggling, are plotting to destroy the refinery’s new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks. “This is an attack on Nigeria’s energy independence,” the statement read, urging the National Security Adviser and security agencies to safeguard critical fuel infrastructure.Describing the refinery as a hub for innovation, jobs, and skills development, NANS vowed to defend the project as a national asset. “We will resist any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s path to energy self-sufficiency,” Nagwaza declared. While respecting NUPENG’s rights, NANS urged the union to pursue dialogue and avoid being manipulated by “economic saboteurs.”
