Maryamu Idris Named Nigeria’s OPEC Representative

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) announced on Thursday that Maryamu Idris, Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, has been appointed as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).NNPCL celebrated the appointment, stating, “We congratulate Maryamu Idris on her new role as Nigeria’s National Representative to OPEC, a testament to her expertise and leadership in the energy sector.”In her new position, Idris will balance her leadership of NNPC Trading Limited with representing Nigeria as OPEC’s primary technical liaison. As a member of OPEC’s Economic Commission Board (ECB), she will influence technical discussions and policy recommendations while collaborating with Nigeria’s OPEC Governor, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to advance the nation’s energy interests within OPEC’s framework.Idris brings over 20 years of experience in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector. She holds a B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Abuja and an M.Sc. in Energy Economics from the University of Dundee, Scotland. Her career began at the Bureau of Public Enterprises in 1999, followed by roles at the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative from 2006 to 2009. At NNPC, she progressed through key positions in the Crude Oil Marketing Division, including Supervisor of Market Research (2014–2017), Deputy Manager of Pricing and Performance (2018–2020), and Manager of Pricing and Valuation (2021–2022).Before her current role as Managing Director of NNPC Trading Limited, appointed in April 2025, Idris served as Executive Director of Crude and Condensate (2022–2024) and Executive Director of Planning and Commercial (2024–2025). Her extensive expertise positions her to shape both Nigeria’s domestic oil strategies and its global energy policies within OPEC.
