China Commits to Building Africa’s First Local Insulin Plant in Nigeria

China has pledged to construct Africa’s inaugural local insulin production facility in Nigeria, potentially transforming the nation into a regional hub for medical biotechnology and alleviating the chronic burden of imported diabetes treatments. The initiative was unveiled by China’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, during a high-profile reception in Abuja on Wednesday evening, commemorating the 76th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Speaking to an audience of Nigerian dignitaries, business leaders, and diplomats, Yu emphasized the project’s role in deepening bilateral ties and addressing pressing public health needs. “Chinese companies are in talks with Nigeria to build Africa’s first local insulin production facility, potentially ending Nigeria’s reliance on imported insulin and positioning Nigeria as a hub for African medical biotechnology,” he declared. The ambassador framed the facility as a cornerstone of the “tangible benefits” emerging from China-Nigeria cooperation, drawing parallels to recent infrastructure triumphs like the newly completed Abuja Water Supply Project. That $150 million endeavor, financed and executed by Chinese firms, boasts a daily capacity of 480,000 cubic meters and now delivers clean water to nearly three million residents in the Federal Capital Territory— a stark improvement from the previous shortages that plagued the area.Yu lauded the partnership model between the two nations as “equal, pragmatic, and efficient,” underscoring China’s longstanding commitment to Africa’s sustainable development. He also highlighted educational synergies, noting Nigeria’s recent inclusion of Chinese language in the senior secondary school curriculum as a step toward fostering future collaborations. The event saw representations from Nigeria’s National Assembly, including Senate Majority Leader Senator Babangida Hussaini standing in for Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau. Hussaini reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to bolstering ties with China in vital sectors, pledging legislative support for transparency and sustainability. “As legislators in Nigeria, we are committed to providing the enabling environment, legal frameworks, and oversight mechanisms to ensure that these partnerships remain transparent, sustainable, and impactful for the benefit of future generations,” he stated.Nigeria, home to over 5 million people living with diabetes according to World Health Organization estimates, currently imports nearly all its insulin, leaving the country vulnerable to global supply chain disruptions and price volatility. The proposed facility, details of which are still under negotiation, could produce up to 10 million units annually once operational, slashing costs by as much as 50% and creating hundreds of jobs in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Experts hail it as a game-changer for the African diabetes crisis, where access to affordable insulin remains a dire challenge amid rising cases projected to double by 2045.This announcement aligns with the upgraded Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between China and Nigeria, formalized during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Beijing in September 2024. Since then, cooperation has expanded into science and technology, with recent meetings between Yu and Nigerian Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji focusing on biomedicine and talent exchange. The insulin plant fits seamlessly into this framework, building on China’s expertise in generic drug production and its global push for health equity under the Belt and Road Initiative.
