Nigeria Achieves Petrol Export Milestone with N371.54bn Shipment in Q2 2025

Nigeria has recorded its first-ever export of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, valued at N371.54 billion in the second quarter of 2025, signaling a transformative shift in the nation's energy landscape following the operational launch of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. This breakthrough marks the inaugural shipment of the product abroad, driven by Africa's largest single-train refining complex, which has begun to alleviate decades of import dependency caused by the prolonged inactivity of state-owned refineries.According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the petrol exports represented just 1.63 percent of Nigeria's overall export earnings for the April-to-June period. Notably, no such exports were documented in the preceding first quarter of 2025 or during the same quarter in 2024, underscoring the rapid impact of the Dangote Refinery's entry into production. The refinery, with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, commenced nationwide distribution of PMS and diesel in August 2025, enabling this export debut amid global demand for high-quality refined products.A breakdown of the trade figures indicates a modest intra-continental focus, with only N85.83 billion—about 23.1 percent—of the petrol exports directed to Africa. These shipments were exclusively routed to West African neighbors within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), highlighting regional integration opportunities. The bulk, 76.9 percent, was dispatched to non-African markets, pointing to robust interest from buyers in Asia and the Middle East, where refining disruptions have created lucrative openings for Nigerian supply. Recent reports confirm the refinery's growing output, reaching approximately 610,000 barrels per day in August 2025, further bolstering its export potential. This development is a game-changer for Nigeria's economy, potentially saving billions in foreign exchange previously spent on petrol imports and positioning the country as a net exporter of refined petroleum products. Industry analysts anticipate sustained growth as the refinery scales up, though challenges like crude supply constraints could influence future volumes. The milestone aligns with broader reforms under President Bola Tinubu's administration, including the subsidy removal earlier in the year, which has paved the way for competitive domestic and international fuel markets.
