Abraham Ngobere. The move, announced during a gathering at the Government House in Yenagoa, signals deepening fractures within the opposition PDP and raises speculation about a mass defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).The development was disclosed by Governor Diri's Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, in a statement released Wednesday morning. "His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, the Governor of Bayelsa State, has today tendered his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)," Alabrah wrote on his official Facebook page, confirming the governor's decision after months of speculation. Alabrah emphasized that the resignations were effective immediately and stemmed from "irreconcilable differences" within the party structure, though he did not explicitly mention the APC as the next destination.Eyewitness accounts and video footage circulating on social media captured the moment Diri addressed a room filled with state executives, local government chairmen, and assembly members at the Executive Council Chamber. In the clip, shared widely by local journalists, the governor expressed gratitude to the PDP for past opportunities but cited the party's "intractable internal crisis" as a barrier to effective governance and future ambitions. "We have served Bayelsa with dedication under the PDP banner, but the time has come for us to chart a new path that prioritizes our people's welfare and development," Diri was heard saying.The assembly members' resignations, numbering 23 out of 24 in the unicameral house, were tendered in solidarity with the governor. Sources close to the legislature indicated that only one lawmaker, aligned with former Governor Seriake Dickson, a vocal opponent of the move remained unaffiliated with the mass exit. The resignations came after weeks of rumors that intensified following reports in early October of Diri's planned departure on October 14.
