NANS urges Tinubu to declare state of emergency on insecurity

The National Association of Nigerian Students has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on insecurity in the country.NANS, in a statement on Friday by its Senate President, Usman Nagwaza, also called on Tinubu to offer utmost support to the Ministry of Defence by empowering armed forces to intensify their efforts against criminal elements terrorising the lives of Nigerians.“NANS does not represent barbarism or criminality. Our concern is Nigeria, especially students, who are directly affected by insecurity.“We also call on the President to declare a state of emergency on insecurity and further empower the armed forces to intensify operations against criminal elements across the country.“NANS appealed to Nigerians to rally behind the Ministry of Defence and reject what it termed the politics of character assassination, stressing that such actions undermine national efforts to restore peace and stability,” the statement read.Speaking on allegations linking the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, to banditry, NANS described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. The student body averred that Matawalle was being unfairly targeted at a time when the country needed unity to tackle worsening insecurity. The government has continued to intensify efforts to curb insecurity in Nigeria, mobilising all military and security assets to eliminate threats to national peace.Tinubu recently appointed General Christopher Musa as the new Minister of Defence, tasking him with driving a more integrated national security response. The administration also said it has refurbished over 100 armored fighting vehicles and plans to acquire more modern equipment, including drones and mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, to enhance the military’s operational capacity.
