Nigeria Customs Service Launches Safe Passage for International Travellers' Personal Vehicles

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially begun implementing a new "safe passage" framework, allowing international travellers, including tourists, to temporarily import or transit personal vehicles through Nigeria.Announced on January 7, 2026, the policy grants a 90-day temporary admission permit for non-commercial private vehicles, simplifying entry procedures and often including duty waivers to facilitate smoother travel. In a press release, the NCS stated that the initiative aims to boost tourism and ease cross-border movement while ensuring compliance with customs regulations. This development builds on existing temporary importation rules but formalizes and expands access for visitors, replacing or supplementing older requirements like carnets or triptyques in some cases.Travellers are advised to contact NCS ports of entry for specific application procedures and conditions. The move has been welcomed as a step toward making Nigeria more accessible to international visitors.
