Lagos govt promises more housing projects in 2026 to solve deficit

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its resolve to reduce the housing shortfall in the state in 2026, with plans to provide additional residential units across the state.The Commissioner for Housing, Mr Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, gave the assurance during an appraisal of the ministry’s activities for 2025, where he highlighted the successful completion and commissioning of the Akinsanya Sunny Ajose and Abraham Adesanya Housing Schemes, Parcels A and B.According to him, the timely delivery of all housing projects currently at different stages of development remains a core priority of the administration, in line with the vision of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the coming year.Akinderu-Fatai urged heads of departments and project teams to ensure that work across all sites reflects proper planning, quality standards and excellence in execution.“We must collectively intensify our efforts to ensure that Sangotedo Phase II, Egan-Igando Clusters II and III, Ibeshe Phase II, as well as all joint venture housing projects, are completed and ready for commissioning by Mr Governor,” he said.He noted that the ministry would continue to strengthen collaboration with key stakeholders, including private developers and financial institutions, to guarantee the smooth implementation of housing initiatives in line with the THEMES Plus development agenda of the state government.Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Abdulhafis Toriola, emphasised the importance of core values such as diligence, fairness and integrity in public service, urging staff to approach their duties with commitment and a sense of purpose.He reminded employees that sustained effort and dedication remain fundamental to success, adding that professionalism and excellence in service also reflect personal values and responsibility.Toriola explained that during the ministry’s New Year prayer session with management and staff, a renewed commitment was made to expand access to decent, safe, affordable and sustainable housing for residents of the state.He further disclosed that the government, in line with the mandate of the ministry and provisions of the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority, LASRERA, Law, is stepping up efforts to address the growing problem of abandoned buildings across Lagos.According to him, the state plans to utilise existing legal frameworks to facilitate the completion of abandoned properties, a move expected to boost housing supply, improve the urban environment and enhance public safety.He recalled that Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has delivered more than 12,000 housing units to beneficiaries across the state within the last six years.
