The Federal Government on Thursday in Abuja strengthened its efforts to combat the security challenges in the country with a call on state governments to focus on developing the citizenry.

The government also  declared that 800,000 people are shipped across the international borders annually. The Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mrs. Esther Gonda, stated this at the meeting of the Federal and State Security Administrators.

She said a report “on the status of human trafficking” revealed that “more than 800,000 men, women and children are being trafficked across the international borders annually.”

She added, “Some of the factors that fuel  human trafficking include collapse of social values, poverty, unemployment, peer influence, rural-urban migration, ignorance and pervasive corruption.

“I therefore call on the states and local governments to complement what the Federal Government is doing to uplift the standard of human life in Nigeria as a strategy for reducing the state of insecurity.”

Chief Intelligence Officer of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and other related Matters, Mr. Jacob Idoko,  stated that the enabling laws in Nigeria as contained in the NAPTIP Act was not capable of arresting the situation.
