Malami's Money Laundering Cases Reassigned to New Judge

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, has reassigned two cases filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against former Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami to Justice Joyce Abdulmalik.The cases, one a 16-count criminal charge alleging money laundering of over N8.7 billion, and the other a civil forfeiture action seeking permanent seizure of 57 properties worth about N212 billion were previously handled by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who withdrew on February 12, 2026, citing personal reasons and the need to uphold justice.Justice Abdulmalik has scheduled proceedings for February 27, 2026.The EFCC had arraigned Malami, his wife Asabe Bashir, and son Abdulaziz Malami before Justice Emeka Nwite on December 30, 2025, where they pleaded not guilty. The allegations involve concealing proceeds of unlawful activities through companies, accounts, and property purchases from 2015 to 2025.Separately, Malami and his son face a five-count charge from the Department of State Services before Justice Abdulmalik for alleged terrorism financing and illegal firearms possession.This reassignment follows an earlier transfer to Justice Egwuatu after the court's vacation period.
